Mike Reilley photoMike Reilley teaches data and digital journalism at UIC and is a trainer in the Google News Initiative training program. He also owns Penny Press Digital, LLC, a digital consulting company that works with news companies on digital development projects and training.

Previously, Mike was the director of digital production and professor of practice at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism. He served for six years as a faculty member at DePaul University’s College of Communication in the journalism program.

A former reporter and copy editor at the LA Times, Mike also was one of the founding members of He taught journalism for four years at Northwestern University before working at and AOL in 2000-01. He’s an “early adopter” of digital technologies, writing his first line of HTML in 1995.

Mike speaks and teaches at national, regional and local journalism conferences, writes for various publications and trains journalists on data visualization, Google, verification, social media and other multimedia storytelling tools.

At UIC, Mike’s data and digital journalism classes produce multimedia stories for the award-winning The Red Line Project, which covers news and urban issues in Chicago neighborhoods.

Mike is the founder of the journalism resource site, The Journalist’s Toolbox. He developed the site while teaching Newswriting courses at Northwestern University in 1996. Read more in his bio and resume.
